But apparently the Democrats have already forgotten why the American people put them in control of Congress, because they've decided to drop the troop pullout dates from the Iraq funding bill. This whole Iraq thing, as you'll recall, is the only goddamn reason the Democrats are in power. I'm not sure I can emphasize this enough: it's the only goddamn reason. Republican corruption, also a factor; Republican responses to US disasters, maybe played a part; my own need for Constitutional oversight, maybe a couple dozen voters shared my view; but in comparison to the Iraq war issue, those are pretty little hummingbirds, and Iraq is a ruthlessly gnarled nazgul's mount with wings like flapping continents. We elected you to do one job, Congress, and you aren't doing it.
That's not to say you can't do it, only that you aren't. I can't even say it's because you think you might lose support from the American people, who support troop pullouts either now or in a year by overwhelming numbers. What's the reason? I just don't have any (non-cynical) idea in the world.
“We don’t have a veto-proof Congress,” said Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader.
Oh, but we do have a legislation-proof president? Why can't the Democrats frame this so that the American people are the reasonable ones, and not GEORGE W. BUSH?? Screw you, Reid. May your big talk about ending the war come back to haunt you in your next primary.

My problem is less with Reid - who has a tiny margin to work with given that the Republicans are completely unhelpful and he's got weak-kneed or right-leaning Democrats he has to rely on to run the Senate and pass ... anything - than it is with the individual senators who voted for this thing. Only 10 Democrats (plus Bernie Sanders) voted no. 10! What happened to the so-called progressives? A handful like Leahy and Obama stood in opposition, but 40 voted the other way. It's those so-called progressives, liberals, and democrats that I have a real problem with.
