Well, the Decider has decided that poor children don't deserve health care by vetoing the State Children's Health Insurance Program, which had experienced widespread bipartisan support.
This is only the fourth veto of Bush's presidency and three of the four have been against very popular health care initiatives. In addition to SCHIP, the other vetoes are expanded stem cell research (twice) and the Iraq War funding bill last year.
Clearly Bush has no interest in any Republicans being elected in 2008 as vetoing this bill will only exasperate their electoral woes. In 2006, the defeat of several republican law-makers, especially Senator Jim Talent of Missouri, where heavily influenced by the defeat of the stem cell research package.
However, there is hope as the Senate passed SCHIP with enough votes to over-ride the veto. In the House, democrats are about two dozen votes short of the over-ride. If those two dozen Republicans wish to return to DC in January of 2009, one hopes they will change their minds.
