Democrats are set to pass binding time lines on the withdrawal of troops later on in the week. Republicans continue to accuse Democrats of handing victory to the terrorists. Personally, I am quickly becoming exasperated by these persistent silly attacks. The troops did their jobs, they won the fight in Iraq. Now they are embroiled in a Civil War. It is not a lack of support for the troops, or a knock on them, or in anyway an attack on the troops to say they should come home. Do the Republicans honestly believe that Congress is demoralizing the troops by raising the possibility of bringing them home to their families?
Democrats have weighed the positives of remaining in Iraq and the negatives. On the positive side is the obvious risk of degradation of the situation into anarchy. Furthermore, the threat of terrorists finding a new breeding ground. The negatives are the fact that the troops lives are in jeopardy. The enormous cost, and the potential that the American presence is acting as a rally point for terrorists and our troops as their targets. In the Democratic opinion the troops lives are too valuable to waste in a continued fight where they may simply be serving as a rallying point for the terrorists. The Republicans disagree and think we are needed to remain for stability sake. However, it is absurd to say that Democrats are demoralizing the troops by wanting them home anymore than Republicans are by arguing they should remain at war indefinitely. Does the Republican party really believe that committing the troops to remain in, and have to return to, a hostile zone away from their homes and their families for an unlimited time frame is helping the troops state of mind? I would think that recognizing the superb job the troops have done so far, and especially in defeating Sadaam Hussein's forces, and giving them a date to come home would be a huge boost to morale. Putting the end in sight shouldn't hurt their morale, but help it. I'm sorry, but these baseless political attacks allegedly on behalf of supporting the troops is callous, demeaning, and need to stop. There is at least one reassuring thing, the American people aren't buying it, and come 2008 that may send quite a few Republicans looking for employment.
