Gonzales hearings

Oklahoma Republican Sen. Tom Coburn called for Gonzales's resignation today during Gonzales' testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee. I appreciate both the reasoning for the call for resignation and the fact that it came from a Republican. Coburn argued that it was generous to call Gonzales' statements misleading. He also said that there was more to taking responsibility than just admitting it, that proper responsibility in this case would be a similar fate to those prosecutors that were fired, and that is why Gonzales should resign.
Coburn's logic is impeccable. His ability to look at the situation without regard for his party is commendable. Bush should follow suit. Maybe Gonzales could have survived has he not lied so blatantly to Congress and to the nation. Maybe the President could have argued that firing them for political reasons was okay and within his right but instead they lied.
Gonzales should step down. It will be good for the country and might give the Justice department some legitimacy. I hope more Republicans join Coburn in calling for the resignation.
