The McCain campaign has been forced to cut back on staff and consultant contracts. This is just further proof that McCain had his shot in 2000 and is now a has been. All of his credibility is gone. The Maverick became one of the most conservative members of his party kowtowing to people he once bashed. What upsets me most about McCain is not merely his stances on the issues but the fact that he has sold out. He once stood up for the issues he believed in and rightfully earned his independent reputation. In 2000 while I did not agree with him universally, I greatly respected him and would have been OK with him winning. Unfortunately, he abandoned many of his beliefs and principles. McCain would have been quite well positioned to ride his "Straight Talk Express" to the Republican nomination in 2008 if he had simply stuck to his guns. He could have been the person to restore integrity and credibility to a party that is in shambles. Instead a once great man tried to take the short route to the Republican nomination and instead shot himself in the foot.

As a fairly moderate conservative - I cannot agree with you more.
