Honoring our Wiccan Soldiers
After a long and ridiculous legal battle, the Department of Veterns Affairs has finally reached a settlement with the families of fallen Wiccan Soldiers to allow the pentacle - a five pointed star and the symbol of their religion - to grace their headstones. The pentacle joins 38 "approved" symbols the VA already allowed on headstones - including such dominant religions as Sufism Reoriented, Eckiankar, and the Japanese faith of Seicho-No-Ie. There was even already an atom that could be placed on an atheist's headstone if so desired. But because of ridiculous and mistaken connotations that link the pentacle to the devil in horror movies, the VA fought against letting this symbol in. The fact that the VA must approve of a religious symbol before it can be placed on fallen soldiers headstone is absurd. I don't care if our soldiers are in the church of satan proper - if they fought and died for our country, they should be able to have whatever symbol they want on their headstone. We do have that whole "freedom of religion" thing after all.
